Unique Cake Decorating With Flowers By Paula Wilkinson

Flowers as a Cake Decoration, unique and easy to place on every one of your cake creations.

Flowers, both real and artificial are relatively simple to use. Read through this article to get some great tips and ideas on using real and/or artificial flowers on your cakes.

Section 1: Artificial Flowers
Section 2: Real Flowers
Section 3: Sugar Glazing Flowers

1. Artificial Flowers

Step 1: Cut the stems from the flowers, approximately 1 ½ inches from the base of the flowers and leaves.

Step 2: Cut a piece of floral wire at least 4 inch. (If you buy the pre-cut ones, typically they are 6 inches which is fine.)

Step 3: Use floral tape to secure the flower to the new stem.

Step 4: After you have done this to all of the flowers and leaves, place them all together and use floral tape to secure them in any order you would like. (Tip: Do not place floral tape all the way down the stems. Only place enough to secure the flowers, making sure that the individual wires do not come out of the tape.

Step 5: Bend the stems carefully using the flower head between your thumb and index finger. Once you have each flower where you want it, cut the excess stems off of the flowers holding onto the floral tape and not the flowers.

2. Real Flowers

Real flowers can be place directly on the cake you have prepared or you can follow the instructions above to add movable stems to them.

Tips for purchasing real flowers:

Tip 1: Make sure you are using an edible flower unless your cake is for show.

Here is a website that has a complete list of edible flowers: http://homecooking.about.com/library/weekly/blflowers.htm.

Tip 2: Make sure that the flowers do not have pesticides on them. You can do this by picking them out of your own yard or just ask the florist that you are purchasing them from. Typically florists have sets of flowers that have never been treated for pesticides.

Tip 3: Make sure you freeze your flowers and apply them to the cake directly before serving or showing it. If you are adding stems, add them as soon as you get the flowers, place them in baggies or an airtight container and freeze them until you are ready to put them on the cake.

3. Sugar Glazing Flowers

Step 1: Fill one bowl with a gently beaten egg white and put some regular sugar in a second bowl.

Step 2: Cut the stems on the flowers or fruits leaving only enough to hold onto with your thumb and forefinger. (Tip: Make sure you are using an edible flower for this.)

Step 3: Coat the fruits or flowers you are sugaring using a pastry brush lightly with the egg white. Make sure you get all parts of the flower or fruit.

Step 4: Using a spoon, sprinkle sugar all over the flowers or fruits. Make sure you cover all parts of the flowers or fruits.

Step 5: Place on a paper towel to dry. This typically, takes a few hours. After they are dry add them to your cake.

You can be as creative as you like with flowers on cakes, they make for a beautiful and unique decoration!

Work at Home Cake Decorating by Julie Jones

Cake decorating is a fun business, but as with all businesses one of the most important "ingredients" to succeeding in this business is marketing. Continue reading for ten ideas that can help your cake decorating business taste sweet success!

1. Create a unique selling proposition.

Every business needs a unique selling proposition. What is better about your cake business than the other bakeries? Tastier, More beautiful, Unique Style, Better Service? Hopefully all of these features can define your cake business. Create a Unique Selling Proposition for your cake business. This will incite people to talk about your products and recommend your cakes to others as well as set you apart from the competition.

2. Send press releases to the local news agencies.

You should do this each time that you participate in community or nonprofit events as well as for any noteworthy happenings with your business. Be sure to emphasize anything that makes your business special or noteworthy in your press release. This will give you a greater chance of your story being used by the editors.

3. Advertise in community newspapers.

Be sure to advertise in your community newspapers. You should advertise more aggressively during important seasons of the year, such as the wedding season and graduation in May and June. Also, be sure to place an ad in the local college and high school newspapers for graduation. Think of specials or discounts that you can offer. Be sure to make the cake reservation "time sensitive" in each of your advertisements to encourage action.

4. Create a Website.

Showcase your business with a website. Be sure to make your website tasteful and easy to maneuver. A website is a great marketing tool to showcase your skills and expertise. Be sure to include your website address in all of your promotions and advertisements.

5. Locate distributors in your area.

A cost effective way to start or expand your business is to locate local distributor businesses in your area. This way you can get more visibility and avoid the cost of an expensive store front. Look for local coffee shops boutiques, bookstores, etc. and see if they would be willing to display your cakes for a commission.

6. Network with local wedding planners.

Local Wedding planners could provide you with a steady stream of business. Be sure to provide them with a portfolio of your work and experience.

7. Network with event and party planners.

You will want to be included in their list of vendors so that they will either use your services or recommend you to their clients.

8. Sponsor local events, church activities, fund raisers, business openings by offering free sample products.

Become a regular at fundraising activities, business events, school and church events. You can offer your products to these outlets at a discount or for free. The exposure that you will gain in your local community is a valuable advertising tool. Be sure to have plenty of brochures to hand out to those interested in your services.

9. Promote Your Business To Realtors.

Realtors regularly purchase gifts for their clients when they sell a home. You could offer realtors a special house warming cake for their clients. Be sure to wrap your cake in a stylish cake box which is printed with your business name, address, phone number and website. Also include a coupon with an expiration date on the cake box for the recipient to use.

10. Word of mouth.

Believe it or not word of mouth can be one of the most powerful marketing tools that you can use. Now is not the time to be shy. Tell everyone that you know about your cake business and ask them to refer their friends and family to you. Besides being free, you will more than likely find that this is one of the most effective methods of advertising that you can use. Word of mouth advertising could just be be the icing on the cake for your business promotion.

Cake Decorating Ideas for Fantastic Looking Cakes by Cristy Smith

You don't have to be an expert cake decorator in order to make fantastic looking birthday cakes. Here are some cake decorating ideas to help you to make your cakes extra special that do not require exceptional cake decorating skills.

First, determine a theme for your cake. If the cake is for an adult, what are the likes, hobbies or interests of the birthday person? For example, if the person likes to fish, make a fishing theme cake. If the person likes to golf, make a golf theme cake. If they like to play the guitar, make a guitar cake.

You could also make the cake theme match their profession as well. For example, for a mail carrier make a mail theme cake or for a carpenter, make a carpenter theme cake.

If you are making a cake for a child, have it match the theme of the party or the child's favorite character, interest or even sport.

You get the idea, just try to make the cake extra special for the birthday person by making it match their hobbies or interests.

A really easy cake decorating idea for making these theme cakes is to purchase cake toppers that match your theme to place on top of your cake. These come in many different varieties. However, if you happen to want to make a certain theme cake for which you cannot find a cake topper to match, try the miniature section of any hobby or craft store.

For the examples above, you can purchase things such as a miniature fishing rod and net for the fishing cake, a miniature golf bag and golf clubs for the golf theme cake and a miniature guitar for the guitar cake. You can then place them on top of your cake. For a mail theme cake, purchase miniature mail boxes and make little letters out of card stock that you laminate and place them on the top and sides of your cake. For the carpenter theme cake, put miniature saws and other tools on the top of or on the sides of the cake.

These are just a few examples. The ideas really are endless, but hopefully this has helped to get you started thinking of different and unique cake decorating ideas that will make the next cake that you make extra special.
